U.S.News & World Report ranks Yale-New Haven Hospital among America's best hospitals

U.S.News & World Report has again designated Yale-New Haven Hospital as one of the nation's top hospitals, according to its annual "America's Best Hospitals" issue.

Yale-New Haven Hospital was ranked among the very best in the nation and listed in 11 of the 17 medical specialties evaluated, including cancer; digestive disorders; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; hormonal disorders; kidney disease; psychiatry; respiratory disorders; and urology.

Of those, Yale-New Haven Hospital's geriatrics and psychiatry departments are ranked among the nation's top 10, while cancer, digestive disorders, gynecology, hormonal disorders, kidney disorders and urology all ranked among the nation's top 25. Of these eight clinical departments, all have been selected and honored for their excellence by U.S.News & World Report for at least six years. Gynecology and psychiatry have been recognized since 1992. Cancer, kidney disease and psychiatry were ranked higher than ever before.

"This recognition speaks to the remarkable dedication of our medical and nursing staff as well as all of those who contribute to high quality care at Yale-New Haven Hospital," said Peter N. Herbert, MD, chief of staff. "We are confident the addition of a new, state-of-the-art clinical Cancer Center, as well as investments in other critical service areas, will allow Yale-New Haven Hospital to continue to meet the evolving needs of our patients."

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a major academic medical center to which patients are referred from throughout Connecticut, New England, the nation and the world. One of the area's largest, oldest and most stable employers with nearly 6,000 employees, Yale-New Haven Hospital is well known for its clinical excellence and patient service.

Last year, the hospital treated almost 47,000 inpatients and more than 462,000 outpatients. Nationally, Yale-New Haven Hospital is one of 50 medical centers that collectively train nearly 40 percent of the physicians who enter practice in the United States each year. The 944-bed hospital, which is the primary teaching hospital affiliate of the Yale University School of Medicine, also serves as a major educational resource for nursing and allied health professionals.

"Yale-New Haven Hospital and its medical staff and employees are very proud to serve patients in our community as well as others from throughout the country. We are honored to be recognized again in the U.S.News & World Report survey," said Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "We strive to provide the highest quality medical care and are committed to ensuring a safe and compassionate environment for all who come to us for care."

The "America's Best Hospitals" ranking appears in the July issue of U.S.News & World Report. Check USNews.com for the full story.
