Response center awarded $2 million in federal funding

NEW HAVEN — The Yale New Haven Health Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response (YNH-CEPDR) has been awarded more than $2 million in federal funding for two significant national initiatives. The two initiatives are the National Alliance for Training Health Care for Emergency Response (NATHCER) and the National Center for Integrated Civilian-Military Medical Response and Homeland Defense.

The National Alliance for Training Health Care for Emergency Response is a national program that develops, tests and evaluates training programs for community-based healthcare providers around the nation to better prepare them for responding to large-scale disasters or emergencies. The National Center for Integrated Civilian-Military Response and Homeland Defense is a unique partnership between YNH-CEPDR and the United States Northern Command. Its purpose is to enhance the coordination and integration of civilian and military healthcare personnel in providing a medical response to an emergency or disaster event.

“The YNH-CEPDR has the opportunity to collaborate with civilian and military partners nationally to implement coordinated heath care emergency preparedness programs which will result in consistent approaches for an effective medical response to disaster events,’ said Christopher Cannon, director of YNH-CEPDR.

The mission of the YNH-CEPDR is to reduce loss of life, injury and illness by developing and delivering services within Connecticut, across the nation and around the world that advances healthcare planning, preparedness, response for and recovery from emergency events and disasters.

Since it was established in 2002, the Yale New Haven Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response has been the recipient of numerous state and national grants, totaling nearly $25 million. This level of support has enabled the YNH-CEPDR to become an emerging world leader in health care emergency preparedness efforts.

“With these two new grants, YNH-CEPDR will continue to pursue opportunities to share its expertise and experience in support of a healthcare infrastructure better prepared to quickly respond as part of a broader community response,” concluded Cannon.
