NEW HAVEN Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) broke ground on Wednesday for its new, world-class cancer hospital project. Once constructed, the 14-story, 497,000 square-foot, cancer hospital will be the most comprehensive cancer care facility between Boston and New York City, offering patients state-of-the-art care and treatment. “This new cancer hospital will be a place of compassion and hope – where the latest research breakthroughs can be applied at the bedside for the benefit of all our patients,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, President and CEO, Yale-New Haven Hospital, who was joined by elected officials, physicians, employees, trustees and hundreds of community supporters to mark the official start of the cancer hospital’s construction. “This will be a unique facility where safe, high quality, comprehensive cancer care will be provided in a fully integrated manner.” The new cancer hospital will integrate all of Yale-New Haven Hospital’s oncology patient services in one building specifically designed for cancer care. The 14-story facility will contain nearly 500,000 square feet, and will include 112 inpatient beds, outpatient treatment rooms, expanded operating rooms, infusion suites, diagnostic imaging services, a specialized women’s cancer center, including the Yale-New Haven Breast Center and the GYN Oncology Center, as well as a floor each for diagnostic and therapeutic radiology. The new cancer hospital is estimated to cost approximately $467 million, and is expected to open upon its completion in 2009. “In just over three years, we will return to this spot and open the doors of this magnificent facility that will rival any in the nation,” added Borgstrom. “Over the course of that three-and-a-half year span, more than 50,000 new cases of cancer will be detected in this state alone. Today we say to all people living with cancer and to every member of our community – this is the day that we start building hope. That is our mission and that is our promise.” Yale-New Haven Hospital currently offers a comprehensive array of cancer diagnosis and treatment services with its partner the Yale Cancer Center. Yale Cancer Center is southern New England’s only cancer center designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute – and one of only 39 in the nation.
