Magazine picks hospital as one of '100 best' companies for working moms
Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been chosen by Working Mother magazine as one of the nation’s “100 Best Companies” for working mothers. Yale-New Haven Hospital was one of only four Connecticut companies to be honored by Working Mother and the only hospital in Connecticut to be honored. Working Mother is the sixth national organization to recognize YNHH as an employer of choice in the past year.
Yale-New Haven Hospital was also recently recognized by other national organizations as an employer-of-choice, including The National Association of Female Executives “Top 30 Companies for Executive Women”; Working Mother’s “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers”; Essence magazine’s “35 Great Places to Work;” and Family Digest’s “The Best Companies for African American’s.”
Yale-New Haven was selected by Working Mother magazine because of the creative and proactive ways it helps its employees meet the challenges of balancing work and family. This marks the fourth time that Working Mother magazine has selected YNHH as one of the Best 100 Companies, having honored YNHH in 2000, 2004, and 2005.
“We’re very proud that Working Mother magazine has again recognized Yale-New Haven Hospital as one of the nation’s best places to work,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. “At Yale-New Haven Hospital, we place a very high value on recognizing and supporting the needs of working parents. We are committed to providing the kind of benefits and family-friendly policies that are important to healthy and satisfied workforce."
Despite a growing number of companies and organizations offering compressed work weeks, job-shares, telecommuting and other workplace flexibility options, a Working Mother survey found that two out of every three working mothers believe there is still a stigma attached to using flextime options that their companies allow. Yale-New Haven Hospital is one of the companies working to eliminate this bias by offering its working mothers not just flexibility but advanced opportunities as well.
Borgstrom pointed to the hospital’s nationally-accredited on-site day care center, its employee assistance program and the dependent tuition program as examples of programs that address employee’s work/life needs.
In particular, Working Mother recognized YNHH based upon a list of generous benefits new moms are eligible for, including courses on infant massage, free breast pumps and on-call lactation consultants, nutrition counseling and for those who are having their second or third child, classes on welcoming a sibling to the family. Employees can also tap into 10 child specialists for one-on-one consultation. New moms also get 16 weeks of job-guaranteed time off, with six weeks paid at two-thirds of their regular salary.
YNHH also scored high in flexibility throughout the organization. In 2004, 1,200 of 6,779 hospital employees were able to enjoy flex scheduling. Staff in patient service areas routinely switch shifts to meet family and personal needs. Finally, YNHH places a high value on not only a diverse workforce, but a highly educated one. Employees enrolled in two-year programs for radiology, nursing and respiratory therapy can receive up to $3,500 in tuition aid and $2,500 in forgivable loans each year.
Working Mother magazine based its selection on eight areas of work life: child care, culture, leave for new parents, flexible work arrangements, women’s advancement, total compensation, work life culture and family-friendly programs. In addition, editors looked at a range of supportive company offerings and policies including health insurance premiums, availability of time off to care for sick children, mentoring programs and other conveniences.
