Yale-New Haven Hospital co-sponsors local business opportunity fair

NEW HAVEN — Yale-New Haven Hospital collaborated with the Greater New Haven Business and Professional Association and Empower New Haven to offer a business opportunity fair for minority-owned businesses and contractors. The Contractor and Business Opportunity Fair, held at Career High School on May 30, attracted over 60 local business people, who wanted to find out if their services might be of interest to the hospital, especially as it begins to build the new cancer hospital.

“This was a great way for Yale-New Haven Hospital representatives to meet with vendors, contractors and entrepreneurs to discuss possible work opportunities, as well as the bidding procedures and licensing requirements at Yale-New Haven,” said Pat Luddy, YNHH vice president of facilities planning and management. “As New Haven’s second largest employer, we are in the position of purchasing many goods and services from area businesses and vendors. The health and welfare of our local community is important to us, and this was a way for us to reach out into the community and make new acquaintances in the hopes of finding common ground from a business perspective.”

There were numerous booths staffed by representatives from marketing & communications, purchasing, plant engineering, environmental services, ambulatory services, facilities design and construction, finance, information technology and the cancer hospital project team. In addition, Turner Construction, Eastern Bag & Paper Company, OfficeMax and Sodexho had tables with information.

In addition, Yale-New Haven Hospital in partnership with Turner Construction Company, whose Connecticut office is located in Milford, recently sponsored an eight-session construction management training program for 14 New Haven minority and women business enterprises. Turner is currently serving as the construction manager on the new cancer hospital.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
