YNHH invests $1 million in Gateway Community College’s nursing program

NEW HAVEN –Yale-New Haven Hospital, one of the original supporters of Gateway Community College when it established its two-year nursing program in 2002 and a steadfast supporter since then, has announced a five-year, $1 million investment in the school’s nursing program.

The Yale-New Haven contribution will allow the college to open an additional 30 slots for nursing students who are New Haven residents. In its first class in 2002, Gateway admitted 24 students. This fall, Gateway admitted 81 students to its nursing program from the almost 700 who applied.

Marna P. Borgstrom, president and CEO, told the audience at the press conference that, “Yale-New Haven and its patients have been – and continue to be – direct beneficiaries of the fine students you attract and train here. Yale-New Haven was fortunate to hire more than half of the first graduating class of 24 students in 2004.”

State Senator Toni Harp and Representative Bill Dyson joined Borgstrom on the dais to praise Gateway and thank YNHH for its support. Borgstrom also noted that in addition to its financial support, YNHH has established fellowships that benefit New Haven nursing and allied health students who maintain a 3.0 average or better.

Dorsey Kendrick, Ph.D., president of Gateway Community College, thanked Yale-New Haven for its partnership with Gateway’s popular nursing program.

“Yale-New Haven’s contribution is the largest single donation Gateway Community College has received during my leadership,” said Dr. Kendrick. “The hospital is the largest cumulative contributor to our nursing program which has graduated 132 nursing students, all of whom are now employed in their chosen field. We had a vision and Yale-New Haven helped us make it a reality for students from New Haven and the greater New Haven region.”

To date, Gateway has graduated 132 nursing students, 52 of whom graduated in May. Borgstrom noted that YNHH has hired many of its graduates.

“The Gateway nursing program is a powerful community resource that brings meaningful education to New Haven residents,” Borgstrom said. “It makes a positive difference in the lives of the students, helps ease a very serious workforce shortage and contributes to the local economy and employment rates.”

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
