New Tommy Fund holiday cards to benefit children with cancer are on sale

cardsNEW HAVEN —For the 20th consecutive year, the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer and the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital are promoting the fight against pediatric cancer through the annual sale of holiday greeting cards. The cards are  part of a regional fundraising effort designed to meet the educational, recreational and treatment needs of children with cancer.

All of the Tommy Fund cards are designed by young artists who are receiving treatment at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Three new cards have been released this year, including holiday cards depicting a beautiful city Christmas tree scene and a snowman bearing a holiday gift. A new Tommy Fund note card that can be used year-round features a patient's drawing of an intricate purple flower.

Holiday card sales have generated more than $300,000 for the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer in the last 20 years. Proceeds provide direct and indirect financial assistance to patients who are treated at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. They have helped fund a pediatric oncology research nurse, and nursing education and research fellowships at the Yale School of Medicine for physicians in pediatric oncology. The Tommy Fund also provides recreational and diversional activities for patients, including family outings and such items as TV monitors, headphones, games and toys for patients.

Tommy Fund holiday cards are on sale now at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Atrium Gift Shop and Connecticut Motor Club AAA offices in Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties. Cards are sold in packets of 12 for $12. To purchase cards online, visit the Tommy Fund Web site at www.tommyfund.org and click on "How to help."

For more information about the Tommy Fund or the holiday card sale, contact the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer at 1 (800)-974-5559.

The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer acts as a helping hand to the pediatric oncology section of the department of pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine, the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center, working alongside dedicated professionals in the field. Through their collaborative efforts, they are able to diagnose and provide treatment to children with blood disorders and malignancies, conduct research and teaching in the field of childhood cancer, and support entire families throughout a child's treatment.

Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, with 201 of Yale-New Haven's 944 beds, offers the region's largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
