Yale-New Haven Hospital news release Working Mother magazine selects Yale-New Haven Hospital as one of its Top 100 companiesNEW HAVEN — For the fourth consecutive year, Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been chosen by Working Mother magazine as one of the nation's "100 Best Companies" for working mothers. YNHH was one of only three Connecticut companies to be honored by Working Mother and the only hospital in Connecticut to be honored. "We're pleased to be recognized again by Working Mother magazine as an organization that consistently addresses the work/life needs of not only our working mothers, but all employees," said Marna P. Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. "Yale-New Haven has demonstrated its commitment to listening to our employees, addressing key concerns, maintaining open communication, and providing the kinds of benefits and family-friendly policies that make for a positive working environment." Yale-New Haven was selected by Working Mother magazine for its overall compensation and benefits programs and a company culture that helps employees meet the challenges of balancing work and family. Working Mother magazine based its selection on several areas: compensation and benefits, flexible work arrangements, a supportive work life culture, women's advancement and family-friendly programs. Editors looked at a range of offerings and policies including health insurance, an employee assistance program, availability of time off to care for sick children, on-site daycare and extra assistance for low-income wage earners. More than half of Yale-New Haven Hospital's nearly 7,000 employees — almost 4,200 — are women. YNHH offers its employees a variety of scheduling options - including part-time, casual status, flexible hours, compressed workweeks, telecommuting and job sharing. Staff have a choice of 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts, as well as a four-hour shift that allows moms to work only during school hours. YNHH supports employees with children through maternity and parenting classes, infertility and adoption assistance, an on-site daycare center, dependant college tuition loans, and other benefits. YNHH also scored well in the area of educational planning by offering a college planning program designed to help parents and students prepare for tuition planning, entrance examinations, college selection interviews and academics. Employees are encouraged to further their education through tuition assistance, an on-site staff training center, leadership training, mentoring and financial literacy programs. There are also loan forgiveness programs which encourage employees to get nursing degrees. YNHH also offers a free confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to assist YNHH families facing problems with physical illnesses, mental health, financial difficulties, substance abuse or family issues. In 2006, over 570 employees enrolled in the EAP program. To aid lower-income workers, YNHH restructured its health insurance premium system last year, so that employees below a certain income receive free health insurance, and others within a set income range, pay reduced premiums. Another new benefit YNHH offers employees is the H.O.M.E. (Home Ownership Made Easier) program, which provides first-time homebuyers with interest-free, forgivable loans for the purchase of homes in New Haven, as well as some mortgage subsidies, homebuyer education seminars. Over 200 employees have applied to the H.O.M.E program. Working Mother is the sixth national organization to recognize YNHH as an employer or provider of choice in the past year. YNHH was also named to the "America's Best Hospitals" honor roll by U.S. News & World Report; named one of the "100 Most Wired Hospitals in the United States" 2007 in Hospitals and Health Networks magazine; listed among the "Best Children's Hospitals 2007" by Child magazine; "Best Doctors 2007" by New York magazine; and included among the "Top 15 Teaching Hospital in the U.S." for 2006 by Solucient Leadership Institute. Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
