Bank of America Charitable Foundation Donates $250,000 to Smilow Cancer Hospital
he Bank of America Charitable Foundation today announced a $250,000 donation to the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The grant will be used to construct a 500,000 square foot facility that will house all inpatient and outpatient cancer services, due to be completed in early 2010. The finished hospital will give the New Haven area a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center on par with other nationally renowned institutions.
Smilow Cancer Hospital will house all oncology clinics, infusion areas and inpatient facilities under one roof. Related research and advances in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer will support new ways of delivering cancer care.
“Thanks in part to the generosity of Bank of America, the completed Smilow Cancer Hospital will allow cancer care to be delivered in a more integrated way benefiting our patients and assisting the caregivers who collaborate on multi-specialty care,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, President and CEO, Yale-New Haven Hospital. “Once finished, no other area cancer hospital will offer the complete array of services that will be available here.”
“Bank of America recognizes the positive contribution Smilow Cancer Hospital will make both medically and financially to the region by creating 350 new jobs during the construction phase and adding over 400 permanent full-time staff members once the facility opens,” said Kevin J. Cunningham, president, Bank of America Connecticut. “We are pleased to help provide both an immediate and long-term positive economic impact for the Hill neighborhood and the New Haven community by assisting in the funding of this comprehensive center which will be a national leader in the treatment of cancer, and attract some of the country’s top medical personnel.”
Smilow Cancer Hospital, which will be a LEED certified “green building”, will feature over 60 infusion suites, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, 12 operating rooms, 21 recovery care beds, diagnostic imaging (including four MRI units, two CT scanners and three PET scanners) and ultrasound capabilities. The building will address the increasing incidence of cancer and the needs of patients and their families for effective compassionate care, combined with the growing need for highly specialized facilities to conduct experimental cancer treatments and clinical trials.
Bank of America Corporate Philanthropy
Building on a long-standing tradition of investing in the communities it serves, Bank of America will embark in 2009 on a new, ten-year goal to donate $2 billion to nonprofit organizations engaged in improving the health and vitality of their neighborhoods. Funded by Bank of America, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation gave more than $200 million in 2007, making the bank the most generous financial institution in the world and the second largest donor of all U.S. corporations in cash contributions. Bank of America approaches giving through a national strategy called "neighborhood excellence" under which it works with local leaders to identify and meet the most pressing needs of individual communities. Through Team Bank of America, bank associate volunteers contributed more than 650,000 hours in 2007 to enhance the quality of life in their communities nationwide.
