Yale-New Haven Hospital selected as a 2008 Most Wired and Most Wireless award winner

Most Wired 2008

NEW HAVEN — For the ninth consecutive year, Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been selected as one of the top 100 Most Wired Hospitals in the nation by Hospitals and Health Networks, a trade magazine published by the American Hospital Association. YNHH was one of only 12 New England hospitals to be selected as Most Wired. YNHH was also selected for the fifth year as a Most Wireless award winner.

For the fifth consecutive year, all three Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) hospitals - Yale-New Haven, Bridgeport and Greenwich - were named to the 100 Most Wired list. This recognition is based on technology advancements made by the organizations to enhance patient safety, clinical quality and customer service in healthcare centers.

According to Hospitals and Health Networks magazine, the nation's 100 Most Wired hospitals have demonstrated better outcomes in four key areas - mortality rates, patient safety, length of stay and the federal government's "Hospital Compare" core measures.

"We strongly believe there is a direct correlation between better patient outcomes and our continued and long-standing commitment to upgrading and enhancing our information systems," said Mark Andersen, YNHH senior vice president and chief information officer. "The commitment we have shown to information technology throughout the Yale New Haven Health System at all three hospitals clearly demonstrates our on-going commitment to new and better ways to make the patient's experience across the board as positive as possible."

Some recent technology-related improvements at YNHH include:

  • Implementation of new clinical information software called Sunrise Clinical Manager - which is a major step in creating a completely paperless electronic medical record. This software gives each clinical team member secure access the patient's up-to-date health record, connecting the numerous caregivers involved in a single patient's care.
  • Upgrade of the hospital's Lawson multidisciplinary business processes software.
  • Implementation of a telemedicine link between Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London and Yale-New Haven Hospital to help in diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.
  • Upgrade of data network that will result in lower costs, higher speed and higher reliability for network connectivity.

This is the tenth year that Hospitals and Health Networks has conducted the Most Wired survey and benchmarking study, polling the nation's hospitals on the use of information technology. The awards were based on responses from 556 hospitals and health systems that completed the survey, representing 1,327 hospitals. Hospitals and Health Networks conducted the 2008 survey in cooperation with American Hospital Association, Accenture, College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and McKesson Corporation.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 3,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
