NEW HAVEN — Two specialty programs at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) - diabetes and endocrine disorders, and kidney disorders - have been recognized for their excellence in U.S. News Media Group's 2009 edition of "America's Best Children's Hospitals," published online in U.S. News & World Report's August issue. YNHCH is the only Connecticut hospital to be ranked in the 2009 survey.
"To be ranked among the best leading healthcare organizations is an honor for Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital," said Michael Apkon, MD, vice president and executive director of YNHCH. "The recognition by U.S. News & World Report is a testament to the dedication of the physicians, nurses and staff and the passion and commitment they convey while working to advance research and treatment of childhood illnesses at Yale-New Haven Children's. The objective of the Best Children's Hospitals rankings is to help children with uniquely challenging medical needs, and for these special patients, it is essential they seek treatment at pediatric facilities with deep expertise."
A three-part blend of reputation, outcome and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology and credentialing were criteria for selection in the 2009 America's Best Children's Hospital's issue. Criteria included a combination of opinions from pediatric specialists about the hospitals they would recommend for the sickest children, and data gathered in a 65-page survey covering important medical information ranging from surgical death rates to whether pediatric anesthesiologists and other sub-specialists were on the staff.
Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital opened in 1993 as Connecticut's first comprehensive children's hospital. YNHCH provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, primary and preventive care and serves as one of New England's major referral centers for diagnosis and treatment of pediatric problems including diabetes care, complex bone disorders and thyroid disease, kidney transplantation, interventional cardiology, and neonatology. YNHCH's specialty clinic offers new and innovative treatment therapies for asthma, cancer, kidney dialysis, infectious diseases, spina bifida, inflammatory bowel disorders and a clinic for long-term survivors of childhood cancer, to name a few.
Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, with 201 of Yale-New Haven's 944 beds, offers Connecticut's largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
