The Harvey family
During World War II, my parents, Dr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Harvey, were very involved as volunteers in Civil Defense. My father, Chief Surgeon at the hospital, had a one dollar-a-year job weekends in Washington, D.C. My mother's family, the Farnams, had been very involved with the hospital since the 1880s. My grandfather was a director for over 50 years, and my mother was a director in the late 1940s and 1950s. During World War II, aside from Civil Defense activities for the city of New Haven, my mother rode my bicycle from our home on Prospect Hill to the hospital to help wash dishes and clean up the kitchen in the then private pavilion.
