Children's Psychiatric Care

The Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CPIS) combines the unique resources of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital with the world-renowned faculty of Yale School of Medicine departments of child psychiatry (Yale Child Study Center) and pediatrics.

CPIS is made up of two components: an inpatient hospital and a partial hospitalization program.

Inpatient Hospital

The Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service 15-bed inpatient hospital is for children with neuropsychiatric, developmental and behavioral problems. It provides comprehensive psychiatric, psychosocial and educational evaluation and short-term treatment for children ages 4 to 14. CPIS's highly trained staff encourage parents to join the multidisciplinary treatment team to help better understand their child, initiate active treatment and develop an effective, comprehensive discharge plan. CPIS is the only facility in Connecticut with a state-accredited special education school, which runs Monday through Friday, for all inpatient school-age children.

Partial Hospitalization Program

The CPIS partial hospital program coordinates with the inpatient service and Yale Child Study Center. Located in rooms adjacent to the CPIS, the mental health day treatment center serves children ages 6 to 14 and operates weekdays, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm during the school year and four hours a day during summer and vacation periods. Children who are discharged from the inpatient setting frequently progress to the outpatient program and attend the school. In addition to these children, the outpatient program accepts referrals from community providers, clinics and schools.

One of the hallmarks of CPIS is its use of the collaborative problem-solving model. CPIS is unique in Connecticut and one of the few in the U.S. to successfully use this non-punitive, compassionate approach to behavior modification in children. It is a no-level, no-reward system that works with the child "in the moment."

CPIS recreational therapists

Another remarkable feature of the Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service is its team of recreational therapists. This group of highly trained professionals develops creative and instructive ways for patients to play - or learn to play - so their transition back to their families and to school is a smooth and successful one.

Yale Child Study Center
