Adolescent psychiatric services
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital provides brief, acute inpatient care
and intensive outpatient treatment to adolescents
and young adults ages 12-18 with a broad spectrum of psychiatric problems
such as mood disorders, psychotic disorders, substance abuse, eating
disorders, trauma, developmental disorders and disruptive behavior disorders.
Utilizing a multidisciplinary staff, both the inpatient and outpatient
programs approach treatment with a comprehensive view of the adolescent.
Each patient
is assigned to a treatment team consisting of a psychiatrist, psychologist,
social worker, nurse and rehabilitative therapy staff. The service
draws
upon its expertise in working with adolescents with severe psychiatric
and substance abuse problems. A full range of services is offered:
- Assessment
- Stabilization of psychiatric symptoms
- Skills teaching
- Family intervention
- Extensive aftercare planning
Inpatient
The Adolescent Inpatient Program is a 15-bed acute care unit located within
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. This co-ed unit contains seven double
patient rooms and two common areas with substantial natural light, comfortable
furnishings and both indoor and outdoor areas used for recreational therapy
activities.
Clinical
services may include:
- Comprehensive and multidisciplinary biopsychosocial evaluation
- Psychological and brief neuropsychological assessment
- Psychopharmacologic evaluation and management
- Crisis-oriented intensive family therapy
- Individual therapy
- Consultation to schools and residential programs
- Case management and collaboration with each adolescent's school, outpatient
clinicians, family and other community agencies to facilitate an integrated
approach, to establish comprehensive transition plans and to promote
the adolescent's optimal functioning.
Adolescents in need of a structured, supported outpatient program may participate
in the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program as part of their transition
from the hospital.

Intensive Outpatient
The Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program is a structured, Monday through Friday, after-school program.
The program provides comprehensive assessment, supervision, structure and support within a nurturing group therapy format. These young patients may be in need of more than weekly outpatient therapy, be at risk for psychiatric hospitalization or require assistance transitioning from the hospital to the community.
Clinical
services may include:
- Multidisciplinary biopsychosocial evaluations
- Comprehensive and multidisciplinary biopsychosocial evaluations; psychological
and brief neuropsychological assessment.
- Cognitive behavioral skill building group therapies that focus on
feelings management, problem solving and social skills
- Group psychotherapy
- Intensive family therapy
- Milieu therapy to help the adolescent with effective management of
behavioral, emotional and substance abuse problems on an outpatient
basis
- Skill teaching to increase tolerance and regulation of feelings
and interpersonal effectiveness
- Case management and collaboration with each adolescent's school,
outpatient clinicians, family and other community agencies to facilitate
an integrated approach, to establish comprehensive transition plans
and to promote the adolescent's optimal functioning.
- Consultation to schools and community agencies involved in the patient's
care
- Medication consultation to community psychiatrists
