Psychiatric Hospital
Patient services
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital provides a full spectrum of behavioral health services
ranging from outpatient care to acute inpatient treatment for children,
adolescents, adults and older adults with psychiatric and dual diagnosis
(psychiatric and substance abuse) disorders.
Children
Children admitted in need of behavioral health services
receive care in the Children's
Psychiatric Inpatient Unit (Winchester 1), a 15-bed unit operated
by the Children's Psychiatric Service at Yale-New Haven Children's
Hospital. A partial hospital program is provided for those children
in need of this service when they transition from the inpatient program.
Adolescents
The adolescent service at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital offers
a 15-bed inpatient program
and a 25-slot intensive outpatient program.
Adults
Adult psychiatric services include a 24-bed inpatient program, a dual diagnosis and detoxification program, partial hospital and
intensive outpatient programs
for patients age 18 and older.
Geriatric
A unique feature of the services offered at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric
Hospital is our expertise with the gero-psychiatric patient. Our Geriatric
Service offers an 8-bed inpatient program.
Levels of care
- Inpatient acute care continues to be an important resource for the
patient who is in need of emergent stabilization and immediate comprehensive
psychiatric assessment.
- Partial hospitalization offers the most intensive level of ambulatory
care for patients who do not require the safety of an inpatient unit.
- Intensive outpatient programs are an essential resource for patients,
who have achieved some stability but need a more intensive, structured
program than weekly outpatient therapy.
Our staff
Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists,
therapeutic recreation specialists, advanced practice registered nurses,
physicians' assistants, nutritionists, registered nurses, and psychiatric
assistants staff our programs. Our reliance on multidisciplinary treatment
teams enables us to address the complexities of behavioral health
disorders using a range of assessment tools and interventions.
Specialized treatment services
Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital has a state-of-the-art Electroconvulsive
Therapy (ECT) service for inpatients and outpatients.
This treatment option is available for patients who are diagnosed with
a range of serious mental illnesses usually involving mood disturbances.
Most of those receiving ECT are adults and carry primary diagnoses
of
major depression, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder. ECT is
provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis and is staffed by
psychiatrists,
registered nurses and anesthesiologists. ECT therapy is administered in
accordance with standards of Electroconvulsive Therapy Practice developed
by the
American Psychiatric Association. ECT policies and procedures are consistent
with Connecticut General Statutes and with Yale-New Haven Hospital
standards
of care.
For more information, call (203) 688-9719. For more information
on ECT, see the Yale New Haven Health Library entry on the topic.
Our Psychiatric Consultation Service provides psychiatric
consultation to patients admitted to other medical services at Yale-New
Haven Hospital (including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics
and gynecology), who are experiencing significant psychiatric symptoms
or problems. The Consultation Service provides a range of services,
including psychiatric evaluation, collaboration with medical specialists
and arrangement for follow-up behavioral health care when needed.
We
also contribute our expertise to a Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU)
located in the Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Department.
The CIU staff is multidisciplinary and is represented by psychiatry,
nursing and social work. This secure unit provides psychiatric
assessment, treatment and referrals for adults who are experiencing
a psychiatric emergency with severe symptoms that are difficult
to control. Children and adolescents under the age of 16 who are in immediate danger, particularly
those who may cause harm to themselves or others, are evaluated in the Yale-New Haven Children's
Hospital Emergency Department.
