Message from Yale-New Haven Hospital Chief Executive Officer Marna P. Borgstrom
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
For more than 180 years, Yale-New Haven Hospital has been a supportive, engaged member of the New Haven community. We have many responsibilities as the city's and state's busiest healthcare provider. We are also New Haven's second-largest employer, a public health advocate and a far-reaching source of health education.
In 2012 Yale-New Haven came together with the Hospital of Saint Raphael – an organization with a shared commitment to the Greater New Haven Community. This historic integration set the stage for enhanced access to exceptional care for our patients.
YNHH continues to sponsor, develop and participate in a wide variety of community-based programs and services that benefit New Haven and the surrounding region. Last year, YNHH helped manage $386.0 million in financial and in-kind contributions through five wide-ranging programs, each one vital to the overall health, education and well-being of our city's diverse population. This Community Benefits Report outlines our strong and growing commitment to the community.
But as important as our financial support are the community-building activities that help keep New Haven healthy. Dozens of local charities and non-profit groups depend on the Hospital, which last year donated nearly $500,000 and provided in-kind services and resources to their worthy efforts. We contributed to local health-education programs, support groups and New Haven organizations. In addition to health education, we offered career education – primarily focused on healthcare careers.
YNHH recognizes the importance of improving our surrounding neighborhoods, too, and in 2013 we assisted residents in accessing affordable housing, child care, job training, economic development and other essential services.
But at the heart of our community support is helping people – one at a time. The five personal stories in this Community Benefits Report demonstrate how our services and programs directly benefit the lives of individuals in our community.
YNHH is committed to supporting New Haven's health, growth and prosperity. We are always heartened to see the positive results on the streets of our community, especially on the faces of our neighbors whose lives we are able to touch.
Marna P. Borgstrom
