Financial Assistance Programs

Yale-New Haven Hospital will provide services for free or at a discounted rate to uninsured or underinsured patients who cannot afford to pay for medical care. Financial counseling is available to help determine your eligibility for these and other local, state or federal assistance programs.

Free Care

Patients whose income does not exceed 250 percent of the federal poverty level will be considered eligible for free care.

Sliding Scale Discount

Patients whose income does not exceed 400 percent of the federal poverty level and do not have insurance will be considered eligible for our Sliding Scale discount. Sliding Scale income exceptions may apply for patients with hospital bills that exceed 10 percent of their annual income.

Prescription Assistance Program

After discharge, some patients are eligible for prescription discounts -- regardless of health insurance or pharmacy benefits.

Financial Counseling

Many additional programs are available to help patients and families in need of financial assistance. We can often help you find out if you qualify for federal or state funds to cover your hospital costs. Our agency coordinators are also available to help patients apply for Medicare benefits. Call 203-688-2030 to speak with or schedule a free, private and confidential appointment with one of our patient account representatives.

Financial Counseling Appointments

Yale-New Haven provides one-on-one financial counseling appointments with English- or Spanish-speaking counselors to discuss hospital bills and available free care funds. For more information, please call 203-688-5470.

We also offer assistance in enrolling in Medicaid or HUSKY programs. For more information, please call 203-688-5473.

Community Advisory Committee

A committee was formed to include representatives from Yale-New Haven Hospital, the New Haven Board of Aldermen, Fair Haven Community Health Center, Hill Health Center, the Connecticut Center for a New Economy, the Connecticut Health Policy Project and other community representatives. The purpose of this committee is to assist the hospital with its ongoing and continued review of its financial assistance policies for free and discounted care within the community. For more information, please email William S. Gedge or call 203-688-8097.

Ecumenical Free Bed Fund Committee

This committee is made up of nine local New Haven Churches who are the nominators for over 25 hospital free bed funds, funds donated to the hospital more than 70 years ago. Interest and earnings on the funds are used to provide free care and reduced cost care for patients who qualify for the requirements outlined in the donated funds, which may include membership in their church, local community or civic organization. For more information, please email William S. Gedge or call 203-688-8097.
