School of Diagnostic Ultrasound

Yale New Haven Hospital offers clinical training and didactic education through its own School of Diagnostic Ultrasound. A 13-month General Sonography program or a 12-month Adult Echocardiography program are available. The programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) and a certificate is rewarded at the completion of the program. Learning concentrations are offered in Vascular Sonography and Pediatric Echocardiography as well.

General Sonography and Adult Echocardiography


Individuals must meet the following academic and clinical requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree completed in the United States or Canada OR Completion of a full-time, two-year recognized AMA or AMA equivalent allied health training program that is patient-care related. Examples: radiologic technology, respiratory therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist or registered nurse. Allied health training program must have been completed in the United States or Canada.
  • Post-secondary academic course prerequisites and patient care experience
    • Communications (English/Speech/Composition)
    • Algebra or higher level math
    • General Physics
    • Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II (with lab)
    • Medical Terminology (online courses acceptable)
    • Patient care (Didactic and clinical experience)
    • Must be able to provide documentation of >750 of direct patient care contact hours either through program of study (examples: Radiologic Technology, Nursing, Respiratory Therapist, etc) or practical experience.

*A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for all college-level course prerequisites listed above.

A non-citizen applicant is required to provide documentation from Immigration and Naturalization Service of their permanent resident status by presenting their alien registration card. The school is not approved by INS to enroll non-immigrant status students.

  • One page typed statement of professional objectives and reasons for pursuing a career in diagnostic ultrasound.
  • 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 recent photograph of yourself.

Applicants are accepted as a rolling admission. The deadline for application is six weeks prior to starting classes.

Tuition: $15,000 for General Ultrasound or Echocardiography program payable in four quarterly installments.

Vascular Sonography and Pediatric Echocardiography

These 6 month learning concentrations are offered to credentialed sonographers. Please request a brochure for tuition and admission information.

    • No graduating adult echocardiography class for 2016 due to change in start date.
