PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration

This PGY2 residency program is designed to support pharmacists interested in pursuing high-level managerial, supervisory and leadership positions in an institutional pharmacy practice setting.

The PGY2 Residency in Administrative Practice consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period. Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency. Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Required Rotational Experiences: 40 weeks 

1. Health Systems Operations and Automation Technology

5. Health-System Pharmacy Administration

6. Procurement and Contracting (304B, Supply Chain, NPC),

Required Longitudinal Rotational Experiences

  1. Cost Containment/Management 
  2. Drug Use Policy/Formulary Management 
  3. Staffing Pharmacist-in-Charge
  4. Manager On-call 

Optional Rotational Experiences: 8 weeks

  • Medication-use Policy (System or Facility Based)
  • Specialty Pharmacy
  • Oncology Leadership 

Longitudinal Experiences:

1. Residency project(s): 
  • At least one major project for presentation at national or regional professional pharmacy conference (e.g. ASHP Meeting or Eastern States Residency Conference). 


2. Education and Opportunities to precept: 

  • Teaching Certificate Program
  • Department publications
  • Nursing and Physician Inservices
  • Medication Safety/Quality Presentations
  • Continuing education presentations
  • Precepting of Pharm.D. students 

3. Staffing:*
  • Two shifts every third weekend (12 day stretches required) and approximately 1-2 weekday shifts per month.  

*Any staffing shift including night shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Requirements for Successful Graduation:

  1. Educational checklist complete
    1. Write a job description
    2. Complete performance appraisal
    3. Write and present a business plan
    4. Analyze and present a budget variance report
    5. Observe a staff counseling or coaching session
    6. Complete a manuscript for longitudinal project
  2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
  3. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least two occasions or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
  4. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
  5. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training)

The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor.  An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
