PGY2 Infectious Disease Pharmacy

Through participation in diverse infectious diseases learning experiences, a pharmacist completing the YNHH PGY2 infectious diseases Pharmacy Residency Program shall develop the skills and attributes necessary to optimize patient outcomes regarding infectious diseases, to collaborate in the multidisciplinary provision of healthcare, provide evidence-based recommendations to guide antimicrobial therapy, and to effectively manage his/her individual professional practice in infectious diseases.

The PGY-2 year consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period. Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency. Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Longitudinal Experiences

  1. Staffing* - Every third weekend and an evening shift every eighth week (12 day stretches required)
    • Two shifts every third weekend and approximately 1-2 evening shifts per month (12 day stretches required).
    • On call formulary pager coverage (schedule to be determined).
    • Weekend staffing in stewardship as schedule allows  
  2. Residency project-  submit research project for Infectious Diseases Week annual meeting and publication to infectious diseases or pharmacy journal
  3. Longitudinal Opportunity in Adult HIV Ambulatory Services
    • Longitudinal microbiology and infection control
    • Longitudinal Antimicrobial Stewardship 
  4. Administrative reports/responsibilities
    • Participate on the Antibiotic Drug Utilization Subcommittee (a subcommittee of the hospital’s Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee)
    • Participate on the Infection Control meeting 
    • Assume independent responsibility for specific stewardship report(s)
    • Assist in precepting PGY-1 residents on rotation and through the NF pager 
  5. Drug Information/Education
    • Department publications
    • Nursing, pharmacist and physician in-services
    • Two clinical case conferences (pharmacy department conference)
    • At least one pharmacy Grand Rounds presentation
    • University-level didactic lecture as available
    • Resident and Pharm.D. students (precept/lead discussions)

    • Opportunity for teachning certificate program if not done already

*Any staffing shift including night shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Infectious Disease Requirements for Successful Graduation:

  2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
  3. Cost management and longitudinal project completed 
  4. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least two occasions or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
  5. Abstract submission and/or poster or platform presentation at local or national meeting such as ID week, ASM Microbe, Midyear, etc. as approved by RPD6. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
  6. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training 
The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor.  An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
