PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy

The vision of the Oncology Pharmacy Services at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven is that as part of a multidisciplinary team, the oncology pharmacy team will optimize the drug therapy of every cancer patient in our system.

The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period. Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency. Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

Other rotations are possible based upon interest and availability.

Longitudinal Experiences

  1. Residency project(s)
    • At least one major project for presentation at the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Annual Meeting or equivalent oncology meeting
    • Manuscript of either Research Project or Review Article suitable for publication
    • Monograph

  3. Staffing*
    • Two shifts every fourth weekend and approximately 1-2 weekday shifts per month.
    • Oncology On Call Pager – every four weeks (pager coverage for 1 week)

* Any staffing shift may be filled at discretion of residency director

PGY2 Oncology Requirements for Successful Graduation:

  1. Educational checklist complete
    1. Pharmacy Grand Rounds (1 hour presentation)
    2. Clinical Case Conference (1: 20 minute presentation)
    3. Nursing In-services (2)
    4. Physician In-services (2)
    5. University level didactic lecture at School of Pharmacy or other healthcare professionals (1)
    6. Community Service (1)
    7. Oncology Discussion Session (assigned presentations)
    8. Monograph (1)
    9. Policy, Protocol or Guideline (1)
    10. Clinical Research Project/Medication Usage Evaluation (1)

  2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
  3. Longitudinal clinical research project completed 
  4. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least two occasions or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
  5. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
  6. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training

The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor.  An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
