PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy

The PGY2 pharmacy residency in psychiatry is designed to equip residents with the skills necessary to participate as integral members of inpatient and outpatient interdisciplinary teams caring for individuals with psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders as well as assuming responsibility for patient-centered medication therapy.

The PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency consists of a series of learning experiences that span a 52-week period. Specific learning experiences and goals will be accomplished in discrete blocks of time, while others will occur longitudinally throughout the duration of the residency.  Residency time will be generally structured as follows:

  2. Other/ Repeat (with Residency Director approval)

Longitudinal Experiences

  1. Residency Project(s):
    • Submit research project for presentation at CPNP meeting
    • Prepare at least one manuscript suitable for publication
  2. Cost Savings Project/MUE
  3. Education and opportunities to precept:
    • Co-precept PharmD students and PGY1 pharmacy residents
    • Department publications
    • Nursing and physician in-services
    • Patient medication education groups
    • Clinical care conference presentations
    • Journal club presentations
    • Present a didactic pharmacology lecture for a university
    • Continuing education presentations
    • BCPS study group (optional)
    • Teaching certificate program (optional)
  4. Staffing*
    • Two shifts every third weekend (12 day stretches required) and approximately 1-2 weekday shifts per month
    • On call formulary pager coverage (schedule to be determined) 

* Any staffing shift including night shift may be filled at discretion of residency director 

PGY2 Psychiatry Requirements for Successful Graduation

  1. Educational checklist complete
    1. Pharmacy Grand Rounds/CE (1 hour presentation)
    2. Clinical Case Conference (1 20minute presentation)
    3. Nursing In-services (minimum 3)
    4. Physician In-services (minimum 2)
    5. Community Service (1 event)
    6. Journal Club presentations (4, including (1) Landmark Journal club forum)
    7. Co-precept (1) APPE student or PGY-1 resident
    8. Prepare/revise class review, monograph, policy, protocol or guideline (1) with EPIC Ticket where needed
    9. Quality improvement or research project (1)
    10. Medication Use Evaluation/cost savings project (1)
    11. Manuscript (1) see below
  2. Portfolio complete (Completed documents for each checklist item uploaded to resident portfolio)
  3. Cost management and longitudinal project completed
  4. Achieved at least 80% of ASHP residency objectives (Preceptor marked as "achieved" on at least two occasions or other documentation demonstrating achievement of the objective as evaluated by the RPC/RPD)
  5. Manuscript suitable for publication (Complete manuscript incorporating at least two rounds of preceptor feedback)
  6. Compliant with all pharmacist mandatory requirements (e.g. current pharmacist license in good standing on file, completion of all mandatory training)

The learning experiences will include a series of learning activities designed to expose the resident to many facets of pharmacy practice with guidance from the preceptor.  An individual resident plan and calendar will be developed for each resident.
