Yale-New Haven Hospital's 2013 United Way campaign was a rousing success and garnered the highest amount of contributions from hospital employees in the event's history.
The campaign, which occurred in the fall, began with an appeal to employees from hospital president and COO Richard D'Aquila, and ended with total contributions of $238,871.
The year's total reflected a 28 percent increase in contributions over 2012 — the largest increase in the community. A full 26 percent of total contributions were first-time donors. The 2013 campaign was also the first that included new colleagues on the Saint Raphael Campus.
The United Way of Greater New Haven supports local service agencies in communities throughout the 12-town region that focus attention and resources to ensure, among other initiatives, that children are educated and families are stable and secure. Yale- New Haven is a long-time supporter of United Way.
"This was a banner year for the United Way at Yale-New Haven," said Jay Morris, vice president of education and executive director of the hospital's Institute for Excellence, and administrative chairman of this year's YNHH United Way campaign.
"Because of the caring spirit and generous donations from YNHH employees through the United Way campaign, our dollars are hard at work strengthening the communities where we live and work."
The annual campaign included information fairs at many hospital locations spanning work shifts to share information with employees about the work of United Way.
Several departments also held "mini" campaigns that encouraged giving within their work groups. Employees also contributed generously to another successful school supply drive that kicked off the campaign. In mid-September, YNHH delivered approximately 14,000 school supplies to students at two New Haven elementary schools in the Hill community
"The success of this year's campaign demonstrates that YNHH leadership and employees are committed to making their community a great place to live and work," said Maria Arnold, vice president, Development, United Way of Greater New Haven.
"The increase in the YNHH campaign is the largest in our community this year. On behalf of those in our community who will benefit from the generosity of YNHH employees, thank you."
