Biography

Arianne Boylan is a Yale Medicine neurosurgeon specializing in surgical treatment trauma, spinal tumors, complex spinal deformities, and degenerative diseases affecting the cervical (neck), thoracic, and lumbosacral (lower back) spine. Dr. Boylan has received both neurosurgical and orthopedic spine training which gives her a unique complement of skills for diagnosis and managing spine pathologies.

She earned her MD from Yale School of Medicine. She trained in neurosurgery at the University of Colorado and Wayne State University. She also trained in spine oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Detroit Medical Center. She then completed a complex spine fellowship with orthopaedics at Yale University. She has stayed on to join the faculty at Yale Medicine.

“I love neurosurgery because you are always learning and always pushing the envelope as to what can be done to treat some of the most complex problems of the brain and spinal cord with the least disruption to the patient,”  she says.

As a physician, Dr. Boylan listens closely to her patients in order to understand their condition and how best to help them. “My favorite part of my job is my patients. I believe that patients have the best outcome when they are really listened to and have a chance to form a partnership with their surgeon,” she says. She enjoys the detective work of medicine and piecing together information to identify the source of the problem and efficacy of prior interventions.

“Surgery should always be the last resort and I work with patients to determine the least invasive approach possible to improve their symptoms,” she says. Dr. Boylan’s ultimate goal is to return patients to their favorite hobbies and activities without pain through a multidisciplinary approach.

Dr. Boylan is active in clinical research and has written several book chapters and papers on surgical technique and clinical outcomes for spine and cranial patients.

Dr. Boylan is an assistant professor at the Yale School of Medicine.
