Darko Pucar, MD, PhD, is a radiologist who specializes in the interpretation of PET and CT scans. He also provides nuclear medicine therapy—a treatment that uses radioactive materials called radiopharmaceuticals—for people who have conditions such as hyperthyroidism and certain types of cancer such as thyroid cancer and lymphoma.
He is passionate about advancing the science of radiology while providing excellent care to patients. “My goal is to provide outstanding nuclear medicine care and education, particularly in oncology,” says Dr. Pucar, who is also an associate professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at Yale School of Medicine.
Dr. Pucar has lectured around the world about nuclear medicine and oncologic imaging. He’s also leading an effort to monitor immunotherapy treatment for cancer response assessment on PET/CT.
“Immunotherapy has profoundly changed oncology practice and allowed for long-term survival of patients considered—until recently—terminally ill,” he says. “But, immunotherapy comes with substantial side effects. Thus, finding the optimal imaging approach for assessing the response to and side effects of immunotherapy currently represents the most important topic in oncologic diagnostic imaging.”
