Accepting New Patients

Leo Cooney, Jr, MD, a highly respected rheumatologist and geriatric clinician, has simple advice for his patients, most of who deal with arthritis and geriatric syndromes. “Be careful about what you read about your condition on the internet,” he tells them. “Most patients with your condition have a good prognosis and respond well to treatment efforts. We can make a real difference for most patients with arthritis, joint complaints, and gait and balance problems.”

While Dr. Cooney acknowledges there is no medical treatment for dementia, he says, “We can help patients and their families deal with this condition and maintain a dignified and meaningful lifestyle.”

A professor of medicine (geriatrics) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Cooney has been recognized by Connecticut Magazine as a Top Doctor in the state in the field of geriatric medicine. At Yale, where he helped build the geriatrics program, he says he is able to draw upon the latest research on such topics as prevention of falls, predictors of functional decline and mortality, and appropriate methods of assessing and implementing the goals of care.

“We have wonderful young physicians coming to us as geriatric fellows, and the students and residents with whom I work have a real interest in, and dedication to, the care of older patient,” he says. “Every day is memorable and every patient is special.”
