Rogerio Lilenbaum, MD, is the chief medical officer of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven and a Yale Medicine medical oncologist. He has dedicated his life to caring for patients with lung cancer and is committed to expanding access to quality cancer services for all patients.

Dr. Lilenbaum’s leadership has helped make Smilow a destination hospital for cancer care in the state and beyond, drawing people from around the country and the world to receive advanced cancer care delivered by leading physicians.

“We have developed a state-of-the-art cancer center program, offering expertise, cutting-edge research and leading technology so that we can make a difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Lilenbaum says. 

A key focus for Dr. Lilenbaum has been to bring Smilow’s high-quality patient care to more locations along the shoreline—to be closer to home for residents in various communities from Greenwich, Connecticut to Westerly, Rhode Island. In addition, he has helped expand access to clinical trials, offering increasing hope and opportunity for patients who need innovative treatment approaches not available elsewhere.

As a respected and practicing medical oncologist, Dr. Lilenbaum cares for patients with lung cancer, which remains the leading cause of cancer-related death for men and women worldwide. He has led pioneering work to identify the best ways to treat lung cancer, especially in older patients. 

A professor of medicine (medical oncology) at Yale School of Medicine, he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters related to lung cancer. 

Consistently recognized as one of “America’s Top Physicians” and “America’s Top Oncologists,” Dr. Lilenbaum is a member of the National Comprehensive Center Network (NCCN) and has also served as an editor for leading cancer publications.
