Biography

Ryan Kaple, MD, is an interventional cardiologist at Yale Medicine specializing in structural heart diseases like aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, and tricuspid regurgitation. He is part of Yale Medicine’s Interventional Cardiology Program and Structural Heart Disease Program.

Dr. Kaple received his medical training at Yale School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He subsequently held fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell where he served as chief cardiology fellow. After completing his fellowships, Dr. Kaple served as an attending physician at Westchester Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College. At Westchester Medical Center, he helped to oversee the trans-catheter valve program.

Dr. Kaple’s success at Westchester Medical Center ultimately led to him being recruited back to Yale in 2018. His focus at Yale continues to be performing transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR), as well as catheter based repair of the mitral and tricuspid valves. He also performs angioplasty and coronary artery stenting in patients with coronary artery disease. Dr. Kaple says that the most rewarding aspect of his job is being able to treat patients with therapies that were not available 10 years ago. He recalls seeing a patient during medical school training who was turned down for traditional aortic valve surgery because the risk of the surgery was too high, and TAVR was not yet available. “It stuck with me,” he says. “I think it’s a remarkable thing, to be able to tell a patient who is not a candidate for traditional open heart surgery, ‘ I can help you.’”

As a physician, Dr. Kaple takes time to listen to his patients and understand their goals for each visit. He also prioritizes patient education—he explains conditions and medical procedures in simple language, which helps patients better understand their condition, allowing them to weigh in on their treatment plan. “I’m not here to just give my recommendation—we’re here to make decisions together.”

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Kaple conducts research on TAVR and mitral valve replacement. He is also an assistant professor of medicine (cardiology) at the Yale School of Medicine.
