Message from the President

Dear Friends,

I am excited to write to you as the President of the newly integrated Yale New Haven Hospital Auxiliary. At our first Board meeting in October, I was delighted to see that the integration was seamless and I look forward to working with such a committed and engaged Board.

I would like to tell you about some of the things we have done thus far. In October, our Health Education committee, chaired by Beverly Lewis and co-chair Gay Steinbach, presented two lectures. The first was held at the Park Street auditorium, and featured Dr. Nina Horowitz, who spoke on breast cancer. The second lecture was held in November at Whitney Center, and the guest speaker was urologist, Dr. David Hesse. They were both very informative and more lectures are scheduled for the remainder of this year.

I was honored to be asked to participate in the Founders Day interfaith service and reception, held at the Saint Raphael campus chapel. The service honored the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, founders of the former Hospital of Saint Raphael.

December was the time for our traditional Christmas tree lightings and holiday toy deliveries for the Toy Closet. Pediatric patients helped light the trees on each campus and Debbie Klotzer and Linda Pasquarella arranged carolers, cookies and hot chocolate, served by Auxiliary elves with green ears! Holiday deliveries for the Toy Closet came from many people and places and arrived in a variety of ways, including a horse trailer full of toys from the Trumbull Fire Company.

In January, the Board voted unanimously to pledge one million dollars over a five-year period: $500,000 to the Musculoskeletal project and $500,000 to the Obstetrical and Neo-Natal Intensive Care Units project. The Scholarship program, chaired by Dolores Zamparo, has distributed applications to area high school and colleges. Eight students studying in the health field will each be awarded a $1,500 scholarship.

Please visit us on our web site,, to learn about our committees and other projects. And check out the Atrium Gift Shop and the Glass Door Gift Shop. Stay tuned, and if you’re not a member of the Auxiliary, join us to see all the great things you can do to make a difference.

Best regards to all,

Betty LaBonia, President
