These are some of the frequently asked questions about the proposed neurosciences center at the Saint Raphael Campus. Watch for more information in the coming months.

What is YNHH proposing?


A 505,000-square-foot neurosciences center designed to give patients access to innovative clinical services. These include neurovascular and stroke care; treatments for movement disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular and spinal issues; neuromodulation; and neurorestoration.

How much will this cost?

The total project is budgeted for $840 million.

Where will it be located?

The project will consist of two separate buildings on the Saint Raphael Campus.

How many beds will be included?

The new project will have 204 beds.

Will that require a state certificate of need?

No. We are not seeking an expansion of our bed license at this point. Many of the new beds will replace existing beds in double and triple rooms in the East Pavilion at the York Street Campus. Because the hospital isn’t adding beds, it will not need a state certificate of need for the project.

Will the project extend into any existing residential neighborhoods?

No. The project will be constructed on the existing hospital campus footprint. It will consist of two buildings located on the corner of Sherman Avenue and George Street.

Will any buildings need to be demolished to make way for construction?

Yes, several buildings on the existing Saint Raphael Campus (to be determined) will be taken down, but no buildings outside of the hospital campus will be impacted.

Where will parking to support the project be located?

An existing garage on Orchard Street will be extended to George Street, and an additional 200 spaces will be located under the building.

What’s the timeline for the new neurosciences center construction?

We expect to submit our comprehensive plans to the city of New Haven in September. If we are able to secure all approvals by spring 2020, we expect to open the new facility in late 2023 or early 2024.
