ICD-10 is scheduled to go live Oct. 1, after 15 months of preparation at Yale New Haven Health System. This new coding system will dramatically increase the granularity and level of detail in healthcare data, which underpins numerous YNHHS operations.

To prepare, the YNHHS project team has organized and implemented intensive education for medical staff and clinical coders. Preparation is complete, but the ICD- 10 journey is not over. In the coming months the ICD-10 project team will monitor coding accuracy and productivity, physician documentation and revenue cycle metrics. Ongoing communication and remediation will be provided if issues arise.

Below are a few of the many questions the project team received during the transition. A complete list of ICD-10 frequently asked questions may be found on the ICD-10 intranet page (visit the YNHHS intranet and click Projects at the top, then choose ICD-10 from the list).

Q: What if a physician's order does not include enough documentation detail for me to find an ICD-10 diagnosis code?

A: Refer to Visio workflow (on the intranet page) and consult with your manager to confirm next steps.

Q: Will certified coders finalize and correct our codes if inaccurate?

A: Yes, Coding will continue to follow standard operating procedures.

Q: Where can I find ICD-10-related tools and resources?

A: Email all ICD-10 questions to [email protected]. For employee access to ICD-10 resources visit inside.ynhh.org/initiatives/ICD10. For physician access to ICD-10 resources, visit md.ynhh.org. For technical assistance, contact the Service Desk, 203-688-4357.
