Emergency Services at Yale New Haven Hospital and at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital are comprehensive, multidisciplinary centers, staffed to treat the needs adults and children with acute and urgent illnesses and injuries. On the York Street Campus, Yale New Haven is a designated Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma facility — the first and only hospital in Connecticut with this status.
At both the York Street and the Saint Raphael campus, Yale New Haven's physician and nursing staff are prepared to care for the most critically ill or injured patients as well as those with minor illnesses, using the skills and expertise from general practitioners to highly-trained specialists.

The Emergency Department has a full range of specialists and equipment available 24 hours a day as well as educational, preventive and outreach programs designed to understand, treat and prevent the most serious of patient injuries. The ED is supported by the expertise of multiple medical and surgical specialties, all available to assist in patient management. In addition, YNHH's emergency department has a strong relationship with the local emergency medical system and works to continually improve processes and procedures.

Yale New Haven is a designated Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma facility at the York Street Campus, the first and only hospital in the state of Connecticut with this status. The trauma center provides the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients, delivered by expert medical and nursing staffs in the emergency department, operating rooms and intensive care units.

YNHH also has a helipad to receive patients who have been critically injured or are located in more remote areas of the state can be airlifted to YNHH more quickly than by ground ambulance to a closer hospital that does not have the resources needed for critically-injured patients. YNHH Emergency Department has a special Chest Pain Center where patients who have chest pain or other heart attack symptoms can be monitored and then, admitted if it is indeed a heart attack, or discharged - often in less than 12 hours - if they are not having a heart attack.

The Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) in the emergency department is a secure unit which psychiatric assessment, treatment and referrals for adults who are experiencing a psychiatric emergency with severe symptoms that are difficult to control. The CIU staff is multidisciplinary and is represented by psychiatry, nursing and social work. Children and adolescents under the age of 16 who are in immediate danger, particularly those who may cause harm to themselves or others, are evaluated in the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital emergency department.
YNHH is one of three hospital emergency departments in the U.S. with Project ASSERT (Improving Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services and Educating providers to Refer patients to Treatment), a screening-intervention program which identifies and helps patients in the YNHH emergency department who are diagnosed with alcohol or other drug dependence problems access treatment programs, shelters and social agencies. Since 2001, specially trained health promotion advocates have screened and assisted more than 46,700 patients.
YNHH has an around-the-clock Emergency Department at its Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford. A full-service emergency department which cares for adults and children with a full range of emergency illnesses and injuries, the Shoreline Medical Center Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department is staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians and mid-level providers, as well as experienced RNs and technicians. It is also supported by the on-site services of diagnostic radiology and laboratory medicine.
