Yale New Haven Hospital interventional radiologists are recognized as pioneers in the field of interventional and therapeutic radiology specializing in image-guided, minimally invasive and hybrid medical procedures for the diagnostic and therapeutic benefit of our patients.
Procedures they perform include biopsies, embolization to block tumor growth or abnormal blood vessels, minimally invasive delivery of targeted chemotherapy or radiation to specific organs, and arteriography and angioplasty to impaired vessels in the viscera and periphery.
Unique procedures that are performed by this section include uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), varicose vein ablation and chemoembolization of tumor in solid organs.
In many cases these procedures can replace more invasive therapies, minimizing risk, leading to less pain and shorter recovery times than conventional surgery.
Yale New Haven Hospital Interventional Radiology collaborates with Yale Vascular Malformation Center, dedicated to treating and understanding vascular malformations of the brain, nose, lung, GI tract and extremities that may occur spontaneously or as part of rare genetic syndromes such as Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu.
The Yale Center, which is the model for 27 HHT Centers worldwide, manages 3,000 patients with HHT, including primary treatment and follow-up. Daily clinics for patients with vascular malformations, genetic counseling, evaluation and work-up for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding and liver, pulmonary and brain malformations associated with HHT are among the services offered. In addition to lecturing in the United States and overseas, the faculty publishes the results of their research regularly in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. Yale founded a non-profit foundation for HHT in 1991.
