Why Choose YNHH for Orthopedic Services

Yale New Haven Hospital's orthopedic services are provided by a large, dedicated group of specially trained surgeons, physiatrists and other staff. Comprehensive care for disorders of the musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones) is available for adult and pediatric patients of all ages.

Our physicians are leaders in their respective fields, serve on a number of editorial boards and research councils, and frequently lecture around the globe. They use a variety of non-surgical techniques for treating patients, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, injections and supportive bracing. When surgery is required, state-of-the-art procedures and technology are available. Surgery is performed at Yale New Haven Hospital, as well as Yale New Haven Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford.

YNHH's affiliation with Yale School of Medicine helps coordinate superior education and training of medical staff, cutting-edge techniques and technology. We also maintain ongoing studies in clinical research, bone biology and biomechanics.

Orthopedic Services We Provide

Adult Reconstruction and Arthritis: We offer diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for adult patients with degenerative and inflammatory arthritis. Among special procedures are hip and knee reconstruction, hip and knee replacement, and arthroscopic procedures.

Bone Density Testing at Yale New Haven Hospital, we offer a fast, easy and painless test that can show if you are at risk for broken bones associated with osteoporosis. Our state-of-the-art scanner - called a DA bone densitometer - shows existing fractures of the vertebrae in the spine. It also shows low bone density. These are two leading signs of bone breaks associated with osteoporosis.

Foot and Ankle Surgery: We specialize in full-service care of the foot and ankle, including a wide range of treatments in advanced reconstruction, post-traumatic injuries, and complex diabetic problems. Our surgeons provide multidisciplinary care, partnering with other specialists including radiology, anesthesiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, and vascular surgery. Our patients have access to the latest technological developments in foot and ankle surgery and treatment.

Hand and Upper Extremity: We treat a wide range of injuries, instabilities and disorders, including hand and wrist fractures, tendon, vascular and nerve injuries, arthritis of the hand, wrist and elbow, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The medical team — comprising specialists in orthopedics, hand surgery and plastic surgery — offer minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures.

Joint Replacement Surgery: Yale New Haven Hospital is a leader in joint replacement. Our expert orthopedic surgeons also perform more single joint replacements - including knee and hip surgeries, as well as joint replacements for shoulder, ankle, hand and wrist, and big toe - than any other hospital in the region.

Orthopedic Trauma Service treats complex reconstructions and fracture problems. YNHH, a nationally recognized Level 1 Trauma Center, offers treatment for fractures of the upper and lower extremity, pelvic fractures, spine trauma, joint dislocation and ligament injuries. Minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgical procedures are available.

Pediatric Orthopedics Services, in conjunction with Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, offers a multidisciplinary approach in treating a wide spectrum of orthopedic conditions that arise in this age group, including scoliosis, cerebral palsy and congenital disorders related to muscles and bones. One of only two such programs in Connecticut, it works with several pediatric specialty clinics.

Same-Day Surgery: The McGivney Advanced Surgery Center provides outpatient surgical services for bone, joint and spine conditions. Patient liaisons guide each patient from pre-surgery education and assistance on the day of surgery to check-in, through post-surgery care, initial physical therapy and arrangements for any necessary follow-up rehabilitation.

Sarcoma Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven treats people with cancer of musculoskeletal support tissues such as bone, cartilage, muscle and the blood vessels or nerves in connective tissues. It is unique in Connecticut and one of just a few in New England. Our team approach to treating difficult problems that affect muscles and bones in adult and pediatric patients, particularly benign and malignant tumors, requires experts in medical and pediatric oncology, diagnostic imaging, pathology and rehabilitation.

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery: Our experts specialize in shoulder and elbow arthritis, joint replacement, fractures and instability. Our physicians have specialized experience in minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and elbow and have developed several new medical and surgical techniques such as  injectable medications for shoulder arthritis, minimally invasive shoulder replacement and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Spine: We treat adult and pediatric patients who suffer from a broad range of injuries and conditions that affect the spine. This includes arthritic and degenerative conditions, disk disorders, fractures, scoliosis and tumors. Among specialized procedures are cervical and lumbar discectomy, spinal decompression, fusion, complex reconstruction and disk replacement surgery. Learn more about Yale New Haven's Spine Center.

Sports Medicine involves a wide range of preventative care and treatment of injuries and conditions related to competitive and recreational athletics. In caring for everyone from professional soccer players to weekend joggers and cyclists, our medical specialists promote non-surgical rehabilitation and physical therapy programs. When surgery is required — such as to repair joint damage to the knee, ankle, shoulder, hip or elbow — we offer state-of-the-art, minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques. Outpatient surgery is performed at YNHH facilities at YNHH's Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford.

Because of the growth in girls' and women's sports, we have recently added a physician dedicated solely to female athletes. Additionally, our Sports Medicine specialists consult with local high school and college coaches. They regularly conduct seminars for coaches, trainers and physicians, focusing on injury prevention and modern treatment methods.
