Cingari Family Boutique

The Cingari Family Boutique at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven offers services and support to meet the special needs of people with cancer. Feeling comfortable with their appearance during and following treatment can help cancer patients feel better and more confident. The boutique offers products to help cancer patients with the side effects of healing.

  • Breast prostheses, bras and lymphedema fittings by a certified fitter
  • Bras, camisoles, swimsuits and other specialized apparel for women who have had a mastectomy
  • Products to manage symptoms of lymphedema
  • Hair alternatives, including a large selection of hats, scarves and head coverings
  • Hairdressing services for men and women, including head shaves and wig fittings by appointment
  • Fashion advice, head-wrap and scarf-tying techniques
  • Makeup advice
  • Sunscreen, non-metallic deodorant and specialized skin-care products
  • Decorative canes
  • Educational videos and books, relaxation tapes and CDs and other gift items
  • Billing services for major insurances

In addition, patients can receive advice and assistance from our specially trained, caring staff, who can suggest ways to minimize and manage changes in appearance resulting from cancer treatment. Our staff respects each patient's individuality and understands the importance of creating a plan throughout and following treatment.

The boutique is open to the public and welcomes those who have received treatment at other cancer centers.

Appointment information

Appointments are required for wigs, compression garments, post surgical bras and camisoles, mastectomy bras and breast prostheses. Scheduling ahead reduces wait time and assures that staff can verify prescription and insurance information.

Why do I need a prescription?

Many of the items we fit patients for are covered by your insurance. Even if you items are not covered by insurance, our certified fitters need a prescription for proper fitting.

Reminder: A prescription does not guarantee coverage of listed item or listed quantity.

How should a prescription be written?

This is an example of a correctly written prescription for breast prostheses, camisoles and mastectomy bras:

Breast prosthesis for (right, left, bilateral) and (quantity), prosthetic bras for (diagnosis with ICD code) and (quantity). Medically Necessary.

This is an example of a correctly written prescription for lymphedema garment:

Compression garment for (arm, hand gauntlet or glove, knee high, thigh high), (right, left, bilateral) for (diagnosis with ICD code), compression of (amount of pressure specified by doctor, generally 20-30mg or 30-40mg) and (quantity).

This is an example of a correctly written prescription for cranial prosthetic:

Cranial prosthetic (code A9282) for chemotherapy induced alopecia (cancer diagnosis code). Medically Necessary.

What else do I need to know?

Patients with active lymphedema must be under the supervision of a medical professional to be fitted for lymphadema garments.

Unfortunately, we cannot see patients with open surgical wounds or drains. You will need to schedule an appointment after you are completely healed and skin is intact.
