Total Body Irradiation

Total Body Irradiation (TBI) radiation therapy delivers treatment to the patient’s entire body at once. It can be used in preparation for bone marrow or stem cell transplants, or as part of high-dose radiation treatment for leukemia and lymphoma. The goal of TBI is to kill any remaining cancer cells in areas of the body not easily reached by chemotherapy, such as the nervous system, bones, skin, and testes in men. TBI is also used to help destroy bone marrow that may be harboring cancer cells before a transplant, and to suppress the patient's immune system so that the transplanted tissue is not rejected.
