Complementary Services Program

The Complementary Service Department at Smilow Cancer Hospital offers care for the mind, body and spirit. The goal of this program is to empower oncology patients during their treatment with the knowledge and support needed to improve and maintain quality of life.


Oncology massage meets patients where they are in their experience with cancer. This individualized treatment aims to nurture, soothe and support. Benefits include improved relaxation, sleep, and immune function as well as relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and nausea.

Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means "Universal Life" and (Ki) which means "Energy". Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living beings. Reiki Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy.

This is a soothing practice that connects the mind and body with the thread of the breath. Yoga cultivates balance and fosters well-being. During each yoga session, breath is linked with simple movements to improve posture, flexibility and strength. Upon availability, individual bedside yoga therapy can be requested. This form of yoga therapy is adapted to the patient's needs and limitations.

Meditation is an effective practice that increases one's awareness. Participants are led by a guide through a quieting experience. Reconnecting to the present moment can reduce stress and create a sense of peace and calming.

Walk In

Guided Meditation CD and CD players are available for out/inpatients at no cost. Individual sessions are available.

Plant material based oils are used to promote relaxation, relieve stress and anxiety and minimize insomnia, nausea and pain. The use of essential oils can be integrated into all therapies.

Zumba Gold is a gentler form of Zumba, designed for all populations and all fitness levels. It blends easy to follow dance rhythms with great music. Chair based options are available.

Walking a labyrinth is a spiritual exercise that allows contemplation as well as a place to retreat, regroup and renew with a unique approach in support of each individual journey. Labyrinths provide a quiet walking meditation and take only 5-10 minutes to complete the circuit. 

Walk in

Art Expression offers varied creative outlets that provide a unique healing experience.

A broad spectrum of engaging classes and workshops, taught by visiting artists, provide patients the opportunity to learn various art techniques and to participate in collaborative installations and projects.

This program is not intended to be therapy but rather a pathway for sharing support and well-being.

Patients are invited to work with an experienced mentor on a writing essay of their choice. Writing can be both powerful and healing. Patients are fully supported in this journey. Individuals can contribute to an annual anthology of written works.

The workshops reaffirm the importance of caring for the person as a whole.  A cancer diagnosis often taxes the entire wellness continuum, these quarterly workshops provide support and allow participants to reconnect with their bodies and become active participants in their own wellness.

The program is located in the Complementary Services/Rehabilitation Services area on the first floor of Smilow Cancer Hospital, room 1402. As a patient, many of the services can be provided on your floor or in your room.  All Services are offered free of charge to patients undergoing cancer treatment at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
