Medical teams work closely with physicians and surgeons of many medical specialties to coordinate your care and treatment. Every step of the way, your referring physician is part of the team and also helps us to coordinate your care.
The Yale Diabetes Center is a regional resource for diabetes diagnosis, education and treatment. Physicians, nurses and staff provide diabetes care for thousands of adult patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes including those with prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome.
The Center focuses on helping patients change their lifestyle to promote better health. Medical specialists apply the latest medications and technologies to treat or prevent diabetes. The center offers a full range of diabetes care, one-on-one lifestyle counseling, blood sugar monitoring, instruction and insulin-injection training. Group diabetes education classes and an educational resource room help patients to learn more about their diabetes.
Outpatient and inpatient diabetes care is offered including free educational diabetes programs for patients and their families. The Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association ADA for diabetes education.
Our physicians have extensive experience with insulin pumps and continuous glucose-monitoring devices. In 1979, Yale Medicine physicians developed the world's first insulin pump, a milestone for diabetes treatment.
More recently, endocrinologists led the first pediatric study of an automatic insulin delivery device known as the artificial pancreas. This pocket size device and includes a sensor that manages sugar levels continuously. In addition, endocrinologists are now studying methods to prevent and treat this form of the disease using immunotherapy. A team of physicians with many medical specialties guides each patient through diabetes management using the latest technologies available. The Center also offers patients on-site A1c testing.
In addition to patient care, Yale New Haven's Endocrinology Program is home to a rich tapestry of basic, clinical and translational research activities.
Research faculty are all successful investigators in their own right, but they also cooperate closely with their peers in both basic research and clinical departments to pursue interdisciplinary projects.
The program's research activities can be broadly divided into three programmatic areas: Type 1/Childhood-Onset Diabetes; Type 2/Adult-Onset Diabetes, and Bone and Mineral Metabolism. Each program spans both basic and human-based clinical research and is designed to translate discoveries from the bench to the bedside.

The Yale Bone Center offers care for adults and children with simple to complex bone diseases and related problems. Patients will learn how to increase their strength, maintain mobility, and preserve a healthy skeletal system.
The Bone Center Team works closely with physicians of many medical specialties including endocrinologists, orthopedists, physical therapists and nutritionists. Physicians have expertise in disorders of the bone, calcium and phosphorous metabolism. Nutritionists are available for consultation and help patients to develop a diet to promote good bone health.
Osteoporosis is an area expertise at the Bone Center. As part of the office consultation, the patient completes a thorough, six-page questionnaire detailing his or her medical and lifestyle history, in addition to, receiving a bone density scan. The clinician analyzes the scan and provides a report including of the patient's lifestyle factors. This has proven especially helpful to physicians and specialists who refer patients to the Center for further diagnosis and treatment.
The Bone Center also provides consultative support for Yale New Haven Transplantation Center. Patients who undergo transplant surgery of the liver, kidney, heart or lung lose a tremendous amount of bone mass. The Bone Center Team helps patients to minimize their risk of developing skeletal disease later in life.
The clinical staff of the Yale Endocrine Neoplasia Clinic provide diagnosis and treatment of all thyroid conditions. We are also a recognized regional resource for therapy and management of thyroid disease during pregnancy.

The Endocrine Surgery Team provides surgical evaluation and treatment for a full range of diseases and cancers affecting the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas. We offer advanced minimally invasive and traditional surgical procedures. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and successful surgery with less pain, scarring and a speedy recovery time.
The Endocrine Surgery program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons. Our surgical teams work closely with physicians in many medical specialties including medical oncology, diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. General surgeons also participate in national and international clinical trails.
Thyroid Surgery
The Thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the center of your neck. We treat a full range of diseases affecting the thyroid gland.If a portion or total removal of the thyroid gland is recommended, thyroid function can be replaced by an oral hormone medication.
Parathyroid Surgery
Parathyroid glands are four pea-sized glands next to the thyroid. The most common disease affecting the parathyroid glands is hyperthyroidism. In hyperthyroidism, one or more of the glands becomes enlarged because it produces too much parathyroid hormone. A minimally invasive procedure called a parathyroidectomy is often recommended to remove the enlarged gland(s).
Adrenal Surgery
The adrenal glands are located on the top of each kidney. Diseases affecting the two adrenal glands are related to benign (non-cancer) or malignant (cancerous) tumors. Surgeons can remove the adrenal gland.
Pancreatic Surgery
The pancreas is an oblong gland that lies beneath the stomach. Surgeons can remove benign (non-cancer) or malignant (cancerous) tumors affecting the pancreas. Most pancreatic tumors require removal of part of the pancreas.

The pituitary surgery team provides consultation, evaluation, surgery and radiation therapy for medical conditions affecting the pituitary gland. The team consists of physicians of many medical specialties including endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, otolarnyngologists (ear, nose and throat), radiologists, radiation oncologists, neuropathologists and laboratory medicine specialists.
