Project ADAM: Building Heart Safe Communities

Overview

Project ADAM Connecticut is proudly supported through a partnership with Yale New Haven Health and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. This collaboration brings nationally recognized expertise and resources to schools and communities across the state and helps build heart-safe environments.

What is Project Adam?

Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory) is a nationally recognized program dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac death. The program was established after Adam Lemel, a young student-athlete, suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) while playing basketball. Project ADAM partners with schools and youth sports organizations to provide the tools, training and confidence needed to respond effectively during a cardiac emergency.

Why Project ADAM Matters

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in both youth and adults. It can happen without warning, even in seemingly health individuals. Without prompt intervention, survival rates decrease by approximately 10% for every minute that passes. When an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used within the first few minutes of sudden cardiac arrest, the chance of survival increases to 50-70%.

What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)?

An AED is a portable device that can analyze a person’s heart rhythm, determine if a shock is needed and provide an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. AEDs provide clear, step-by-step instructions to guide anyone through the process – no medical background needed.

How Project ADAM Works

Project ADAM partners with schools, communities and organizations to:

  • Develop Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs): Customized protocols to guide staff during emergencies
  • Provide Hands-On Training: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED training
  • Assess AED Readiness: Ensuring devices are accessible, maintained and strategically placed
  • Conduct Emergency Drills: Practice scenarios to improve response time and coordination
  • Receive Designation: Schools will receive a Heart Safe designation and can proudly display this with a certificate, banner, and yearly heart stickers with re-certification

Why Having a Heart Safe School is Important

It is estimated that up to 20% of the population is in a school on any given day. By obtaining a Heart Safe designation, schools will be fully prepared to respond to sudden cardiac arrest – where every second can mean the difference between life and death.
