Congenital Cardiovascular Surgery
Through a joint program with Connecticut Children's Medical Center called Yale New Haven-Connecticut Children’s Heart Program, we offer the full spectrum of pediatric cardiovascular surgery methods available.
Our board-certified pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, Mohsen Karimi, MD, has extensive specialized training in every aspect of congenital heart disease and provides care to patients at both hospitals. Through a team approach, he provides expert care to children of all ages, from as early as when they're in the mother's womb to young adult. He collaborates with experts in maternal-fetal medicine, pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, nursing and intensive care to provide comprehensive treatment to patients. Once patients turn 21, we offer a smooth transition over to the adult congenital heart program.
Surgical procedures and areas of focus:
- Neonatal and pediatric repair of complete congenital cardiac anomalies
- Repair of adult congenital heart disease
- Vale repair or replacement
- Minimally invasive approaches to heart disease for certain lesions
- Blood conservation cardiac surgery
Complex procedures we perform include:
- BT shunts

- Coarctation repair
- PDA ligation

- Arterial switch procedures
Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic Surgery Outcomes Data
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) maintains the STS National Database, which measures cardiothoracic surgery outcome data for participating medical centers. These charts compare the outcomes of Yale New Haven-Connecticut Children’s Heart Program to the average outcomes of medical centers who report data to the STS.
