What to Expect

When your child is referred to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital for cochlear implants, You will meet with our team to learn and ask questions about your child’s diagnosis, cochlear implants, the process and expected outcomes.

In this initial phase, you can expect:

  • ENT consultation
  • Speech and language evaluation
  • Imaging studies (CT scan/MRI)
  • Social work consultation
  • Developmental assessment

Behind-the-scenes, our team participates in a monthly meeting with relevant team members such as audiology, ENT surgeons, social work, speech language pathologists, nurse coordinators. At this meeting the team discusses your child’s specific case to determine the best treatment plan.

Throughout your child’s journey, our cochlear implant coordinator and your audiologist will be with you every step of the way to answer any questions or concerns you may have. This includes developing a post-surgery rehab plan.

What is cochlear implant surgery?

Cochlear implant surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your child’s ENT surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear. The implant is then placed under the skin and the electrode is inserted into the inner ear. The surgical team will perform tests to measure your response to the implant. The incision will be closed, often with disposable stitches, so there may be no stitches to remove later.

What can I expect after my child’s cochlear implant surgery?

Your doctor will talk with you about when your child’s implant can be activated and paired with a sound processor, typically three to four weeks after surgery. During your child’s activation appointment, you can expect:

  • The external processor is placed and activated on your child’s head
  • Your child will experience their first “listening day” with soft initial settings
  • Introduction to new sounds in a gentle, child friendly way
  • Set up appointments with the company to review all the components provided to you
