Choosing a physician to care for your heart

Board certification is considered the gold standard when checking credentials of a prospective cardiologist or cardiothoracic surgeon. Each specialty has a national board that sets standards and certifies physicians who have completed the required years of specialized training and passed a rigorous examination. Many excellent physicians are not board certified, but certification is one objective measure you can use to guide your choice.

Yale-New Haven Hospital has a free telephone referral service for the general public with detailed information--including board certification--on participating members of the hospital's medical staff. The Physician Referral Service provides information about specialties, office locations, hours, education and insurance participation. The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
