The five-year survival rate for melanoma when detected and treated in its early stages is 98%. Nearly 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. An estimated 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. FYI - The dermatologists who are conducting the screening will not do biopsies as part of this process. They will perform a full body exam that involves disrobing and wearing a hospital gown. It is done in a private exam room. The staff will provide referrals to anyone who has a suspicious mole, mark, discoloration or lesion. Or the patient can simply ask the dermatologist who performs the screening for his/her business card to call the office and make an appointment. Patients leave with a paper that will identify exactly where the suspicious area was found.
