A Bicentennial Milestone: Yale New Haven Hospital Reflects on 200 Years of Care

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

New Haven, CT (May 27, 2026) – Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) celebrated its bicentennial today, marking 200 years of advancing patient care, medical innovation and community service while looking ahead to its third century.

Hospital leaders, staff, community members and elected officials gathered on the York Street Campus (YSC) for a ceremony recognizing the hospital’s legacy as one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and its enduring commitment to patients and families across the region.

“Two hundred years ago, a group of visionary New Haven residents set out to create a hospital that would serve the community and transform care for generations to come,” said Katherine Heilpern, MD, president of Yale New Haven Hospital. “From a small 13-bed facility to a nationally recognized academic health system, our growth has been guided by a simple but powerful mission: putting patients and families at the center of everything we do.”

Founded in 1826 as Connecticut’s first nonprofit hospital and the fourth voluntary hospital in the nation, YNHH has grown into a more than 1,500-bed institution and a cornerstone of Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS). Over two centuries, the hospital has played a key role in advancing medicine, from early adoption of X-rays and intensive care to innovations in organ transplantation and cancer treatment.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker joined the celebration and issued a proclamation recognizing the hospital’s contributions to the city and region.

“For 200 years, Yale New Haven Hospital has been an essential part of New Haven – caring for our community, providing good paying jobs and meaningful careers for our residents, and helping position our city as a center for medical excellence and innovation,” said Mayor Elicker. ““Generations of New Haveners have received life-enhancing and life-saving medical care at Yale New Haven Hospital and we look forward to the hospital’s continued partnership towards ensuring a healthier, stronger community.”

As the flagship of YNHHS, YNHH continues to drive innovation and expand access to advanced care across the Northeast.

“Yale New Haven Hospital has long set the standard for excellence in patient care, research and education,” said Christopher O’Connor, CEO of Yale New Haven Health. “While we honor this extraordinary legacy, we are equally focused on the future – investing in new facilities, advancing groundbreaking research and ensuring patients have access to the most innovative treatments close to home.”

As part of its continued investment in advanced care, YNHH will open the Adams Neurosciences Center in 2027. The new center will provide highly specialized, personalized care for patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions, while also serving as a hub for research and discovery.

The bicentennial celebration underscores YNHH’s continued leadership in healthcare and its role as a trusted resource for generations of patients and families.

Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), part of Yale New Haven Health, is a nationally recognized, 1,541-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine (YSM). Founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826, today, YNHH has two New Haven-based campuses, and also includes Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital.
