Thomas Balcezak, MD, MPH appointed Chief Medical Officer of Yale New Haven Hospital

Yale New Haven Hospital today announced that Thomas Balcezak, MD, MPH has been appointed Chief Medical Officer, effective immediately. Dr. Balcezak was formerly Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer for Yale New Haven Hospital, with responsibility for clinical quality, operations improvement, physician credentialing, hospital licensure and accreditation, and program development in the Neurosciences and Medicine Service Lines.

“Dr. Balcezak is eminently qualified for the role of Chief Medical Officer,” said Richard D’Aquila, President of Yale New Haven Hospital and Executive Vice President of Yale New Haven Health System. “He has spent the last 15 years in leadership positions at Yale New Haven Hospital, progressively increasing his responsibilities for performance management, clinical oversight, and medical affairs management.”

As the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Balcezak will be responsible for all aspects of medical staff affairs administration, graduate medical education, patient safety and clinical quality, accreditation and regulatory readiness, the Hospitalist service, and care management. He will also continue to lead Yale New Haven Health System’s clinical redesign efforts.

A board-certified internist, Dr. Balcezak earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and Master’s degree in Public Health from Yale University. He completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and lecturer in Public Health at the Yale University School of Medicine, Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and American Board of Internal Medicine.

Natives to Connecticut, Dr. Balcezak and his wife Dr. Soni Clubb live in New Haven with their two daughters.
