WATERBURY –Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital and Waterbury Hospital have partnered to provide high quality care for newborn babies in Greater Waterbury and Western Connecticut by offering around-the-clock medical coverage at Waterbury Hospital’s Special Care Nursery.
Waterbury Hospital Special Care Nursery is a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staffed by Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) neonatologists, specially trained NICU nurses and lactation counselors to support any newborn requiring intensive care including premature babies starting at 28-weeks gestation. As part of this partnership, Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s neonatal specialists care for patients in the NICU and will also provide well-visit services to infants born at Waterbury Hospital. The Waterbury Hospital Special Care Nursery is part of the YNHCH Neonatal Network, which includes four other neonatal intensive care units in Connecticut.

Under this agreement, Dr. Yeisid Gozzo, MD, has been named Medical Director of the Waterbury Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She will be responsible for overseeing all medical care in the NICU, including data collection, clinical guidelines implementation and supervision of the neonatologists at Waterbury Hospital. Dr’s Emily Gritz and Melissa Posner round out the neonatal team at Waterbury Hospital. All three also work at YNHCH as attending neonatologists and Dr. Gozzo serves as Chair of Pediatrics at Waterbury Hospital.
Dr. Matthew Bizzarro serves as Medical Director for the YNHCH Neonatal Network, a network of four neonatal intensive care units in Connecticut that now includes Waterbury Hospital. In this role he provides support and direction for the medical director in each unit.
