Yale New Haven Hospital listed among best workplaces for commuters

6/1/2012 — Yale New Haven Hospital is the first hospital in Connecticut to be named one of the best workplaces for commuters in the United States. The designation is given by Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC), a program managed by the National Center for Transit Research based at the University of South Florida.

Employers who meet the National Standard of Excellence in commuter benefits — a standard created by the National Center for Transit Research (NCTR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — can qualify for the list of Best Workplaces for Commuters.

YNHH's traffic demand management program includes commuting and parking alternatives like a shuttle service, public transportation subsidies, support for carpooling, vanpooling and alternative modes of transportation, and telecommuting.

"A traffic demand management program like ours supports employees and is good for our environment," said Rodney Slaughter, YNHH manager of parking and sustainable transportation. "It is one of the reasons we remain an employer of choice." According to Slaughter, YNHH's traffic demand program not only benefits employees, it helps solve parking challenges, demonstrates environmental excellence by reducing gasoline demand, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution and exhibits corporate citizenship.

Seven other companies in Connecticut have the BWC designation, including Yale University. The others are for-profit companies in Danbury, Trumbull, Wallingford and Stamford.
