Yale New Haven Hospital named U.S. News & World Report 2022-2023 Best Hospitals for maternity care

Tuesday, December 6, 2022

New Haven, CT (Dec. 6, 2022) – Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been named as a 2022-2023 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice. This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The annual evaluation is designed to assist expectant parents, in consultation with their doctors, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a High Performing hospital for Maternity Care,” said Katie Donohue, interim vice president, Women’s Health, Yale New Haven Hospital. “This recognition highlights the dedication of our extraordinary teams of maternal health physicians, midwives, nurses, lactation consultants and staff and their commitment to providing exceptional care to pregnant persons and their newborns. There is no greater priority than ensuring every patient receives the highest standard of care.”

Yale New Haven Hospital earned a “High Performing” designation in recognition of maternity care as measured by factors such as newborn complication rates. According to the magazine, U.S. News asked hospitals to provide data for various measures. Hospitals that scored well on multiple measures have been recognized as high performing. High performing hospitals had fewer early deliveries, fewer C-sections, and fewer newborn complications than other hospitals, and had higher rates of breast milk feeding. The rankings are based on services and amenities provided to patients by the hospital.

U.S. News evaluated nearly 650 hospitals that provide high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies for its 2022-2023 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Fewer than half of all hospitals that offer maternity care and participated in the survey received a High Performing designation.

“When expectant parents are considering their options for welcoming a baby to the world, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care are designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in delivering babies for uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that has earned a High Performing designation may be a good option for parents, in consultation with their medical provider, to consider.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates, among other measures.

Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), part of Yale New Haven Health, is a nationally recognized, 1,541-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine (YSM).
