Yale New Haven Hospital has become the first Connecticut hospital to earn certification for its Pregnancy After Loss Clinic through the U.S. Pregnancy After Loss Network, marking a significant advancement in specialized care for patients navigating pregnancy following miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss.
The Pregnancy After Loss Clinic, part of YNHH’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine program, brings together a multidisciplinary team, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, behavioral health experts, nurses and support staff. It offers enhanced monitoring, individualized care plans and integrated emotional support services throughout pregnancy. This approach helps provide reassurance while improving clinical outcomes and the patient experience.
“Pregnancy after loss presents unique challenges, often accompanied by anxiety, uncertainty and grief,” said Katherine Kohari, MD, associate director, Fetal Care Center, Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, medical director of YNHH’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program and assistant professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services, Yale School of Medicine. “The clinic was designed to address these complexities by creating a supportive, responsive environment focused on care continuity, communication and trust.”
Dr. Kohari, who is the lead clinician at the clinic, emphasized that pregnancy after loss requires both clinical expertise and compassion.
“It is essential that parents feel their voices are heard, their experiences are acknowledged and their concerns are taken seriously,” she said. “Every family’s journey is different, and we work closely with each patient to build a care plan that reflects their individual needs and preferences.”
