On May 28, Natalie Cooper, APRN, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), came to a York Street Campus conference room with an agenda in hand, ready for a meeting.
What she walked into instead was a celebration.
A chorus of “congratulations!” from CTICU colleagues and fellow YNHH nurses greeted a clearly surprised Cooper, who learned she was YNHH’s Magnet Nurse of the Year.
Cooper was honored for embodying the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Nursing Excellence principles by consistently demonstrating “exceptional clinical excellence and a profound commitment to education, significantly impacting patient care and the professional development of her colleagues,” her nomination letter stated.
One example of that commitment has been Cooper’s work to develop and implement the Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification program for cardiac surgery at YNHH. The program provides specialized training in managing complex cardiac emergencies.
Cooper created and delivered comprehensive training materials for nursing staff and other team members. She also did extensive work to establish YNHH as a center of excellence in Cardiac Surgical Unit Advanced Life Support, bringing additional training and state-of-the-art equipment to the hospital.
“Natalie’s contributions have had a profound impact on nursing and health care at multiple levels,” her nomination stated. “Her efforts have led to a marked improvement in the competency and confidence of our nursing staff, resulting in better patient outcomes and enhanced recovery rates. The establishment of YNHH as a center of excellence has positioned our hospital as a leader in cardiac care, attracting top talent and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.”
